Ive always been a fan of independent games. You know, the cheap, low budget games that no ones ever heard of. Theyre often a lot more fun than the top-of-the-line brand new $60 dollar Xbox360/PS3/Wii/PC games, and you dont need an amazing computer or console to run them. Often, simple=better.
Spiderweb Software, a small company founded in 1994, has been making high quality games for years. They focus primarily on RPGs, featuring massive, open worlds and a rich, deep story. Story is a big focus for Spiderwebs games, sometimes containing so much dialogue it can be a bit daunting. Their Geneforge and Avernum sagas easily contain dozens of hours eachand theres 5 games in each series! Re playability is huge, as there are often multiple endings for each game, depending on the choices you make. Character customization is varied and detailed, having almost limitless combinations of skills and characters.
The graphics are far behind anything youd find in any game on the shelf in stores today, but dont let that stop you from trying these gems out. These are some of my favorite games of all time, and just writing this makes me want to go play them again. If you value deep gameplay and an interesting story over flashy graphics-Spiderweb Software might have something for you.
